Developing 'project picturebook'

August 22, 2017

My latest project was to create three 32 page picture-books influenced by the tales of Hans Christian Andersen. These books are based locally – Northumberland and the Scottish Borders.

My creative process generally involves a lot of research, followed by rough thumbnails and a few sketches. I did this for all three stories together, before moving on to the colouring stage. I would like to show you a little bit about the development process of these illustrations as they evolve.

I’m sure you don’t want to see my scribbled notes and mind-maps, so I will show you some of the sketches and layout ideas, outline drawings and coloured versions.

The first book is based on Andersen’s Little Tuk. The original story can be read here: http://1fairytale.com/hc-andersen/little-tuk
